2009 Opening Night Photos
Los Angeles Irish Film Festival
Welcome to the official web-site for the Los Angeles Irish Film Festival..
It's with great pleasure that we announce the opening of LAIFF on September 23rd 2009, a much anticipated sequel to our hugely successful inaugural festival in 2008.
The LAIFF is about celebrating the Irish passion for story telling and our deep-rooted love for the tellers of tales.
A rich and ancient tradition that started around the hearth of every Irish household, our cultural passion for storytelling has found its way onto the world stage through the medium of film.
Cutting edge cinematic technology and aesthetic vision may have taken the place of flickering hearth flames, but it's that same truth seeking curiosity that drives the modern Irish storyteller into exploring the universally fascinating depths of the human condition.
Coupled with the treasures of our movie-making past, LAIFF presents modern cinematic works as diverse as they are unique and in bringing them together in the arena of a film festival, we have created a type of cinematic barometer for the cultural climate of Ireland in 2009.
Of course, we all know how famously variable the Irish climate can be, so each year the barometer may yield a slightly or even wildly different reading.
2009 presents its own cinematic micro-climate - questions to be posed and truths to be sought - so come and muse, debate, explore, celebrate and be entertained with us... and oh, bring an umbrella just in case!
Steve Brennan
Remembering Steve Brennan
The Los Angeles Film Festival of 2009 will be dedicated to remembering and cheering the vibrant, all-embracing life of Steve Brennan - veteran journalist and International Editor for the Hollywood Reporter, author of “Emeralds in Tinseltown”, Film maker, incomparable character and friend.
As an advisory board member of the LAIFF, Steve gave of himself without measure, opening up his adventure-forged knowledge, uproarious stories and creativity to the festival like a much-voyaged pirate opening a chest filled with gems.
To call Steve unique is redundant – a waste of words.
It’s like calling an apple, an apple.
Words were his work, his life and they made up a mantle he wore with aplomb at every event, every meeting, every communion with another human being – his tongue at once eloquent, musical, whimsical, intelligent, informed and most often:
bloody hilarious.
He leaves behind Bernadette – his constant companion and love – and family and friends who will forever celebrate the gift that life gave us in the shape of one inimitable, joyous, life-embracing character called Steve Brennan.
We will miss you Steve, gan dabht,
